THE FAUNUS EYES 2014
Marble Sculpture
Faunus is a Roman pastoral God, takes care of the cattle and the countryside and lives in the woods.
It is the God Pan for the Greeks, literally, it is he who protects the cattle from the wolves.
Has legs, feet and horns of goats and long ears and hairy.
He was born in Arcadia and, when Mercury saw him, wrapped him in a skin and took him to heaven to amuse the Gods and in return made him immortal and if he returned to earth would be TRANSFORMED IN STONE.
In his youth he fell in love with Ninfa Sìrix, but this one did not correspond.
He was chasing her by the river Landon, but when he came to seize her, the Gods felt sorry for his despair and turned it into a cane.
Pan was devastated. In his sadness he cut a few pieces of cane in unequal sizes, joined them sideways, and composed with them a flute.
With this flute he composed wonderful melodies, which accompanied with his voice, as beautiful as ugly his body.
